Mountain Chic

Reflections and observations on culture, food, style and travel

Fall makes it easier to dress stylishly, even if you have to wear more clothing.  Why?  An extra element of flair is practically a necessity: a scarf, a coat, a cardigan.  Choose the right outer layer and you can take a plain t-shirt and jeans (or even a workout tank and leggings) to next-level adorable.  Street style stars know this formula.  Start with basics – jeans, simple top – and add unexpected color, texture or shape in the form of a statement sweater. Add cool footwear for the win – I’m into the amazing sneakers in stores right now to cater to the athleisure trend, but of course, if you’re heading into a fashion show, you might bust out your heels.  Extra credit for scarves, covetable handbags or interesting eyewear.  For example:

{In New York: Chunky grey cardigan and orange sneakers with simple button-down and pants.  Extra credit: Bag with textured handles, translucent sunnies, bright lip.  Image credit: Fashion Bomb Daily}

{In Copenhagen: Simple button-down and black denim with multicolored cardigan.  Extra credit: Statement necklace, oversized black bag.  Image credit: Livin Cool}

{In London: White cable knit sweater and black skinny pants with camel cardigan.  Extra credit: Drool-worthy boots, animal-print bag, awesome hair.  Image credit: Le Fashion}

{In Paris: light denim and button-down with grey cape.  Extra credit: multicolored scarf, structured glossy bag, being Miroslava Duma.  Image credit: The Fashion Spot}

You, too, can craft a star street look to feel polished and paparazzi-ready on the Sunday morning Starbucks run or the Saturday afternoon Chipotle run or even the Tuesday pickup at soccer practice.  Heck, if you live in Colorado, you could potentially wear this look to almost any fancy restaurant and be admitted without a second glance (we’re pretty casual).
