Mountain Chic

Reflections and observations on culture, food, style and travel

O world, I cannot hold thee close enough!
    Thy winds, thy wide grey skies!
    Thy mists, that roll and rise!
Thy woods, this autumn day, that ache and sag
And all but cry with colour! That gaunt crag
To crush! To lift the lean of that black bluff!
World, World, I cannot get thee close enough!

~From God’s World by Edna St. Vincent Millay

{‘Tis the season: Time to splurge on Starbucks apple cider and an indulgent cashmere wrap that will brighten gray days ahead.}

Today is the first day of fall, and the start of the most wonderful time of the year!  The cues for autumn are a bit different where we live, at 8000 feet above sea level.  Most of our trees are pines so colorful leaves are limited (though not totally absent!).  But this is the time of year the elk are in our yard daily, and we hear them bugle nightly.  To find myself face to face with an elk right outside the window is a fairly common situation:

We see deer all the time, but there’s been a fawn explosion this fall:

It’s the perfect time of year to light a cozy candle reminiscent of a crackling fire:

I’m also willing chillier temps on a daily basis so I can finally wear my favorite purchase this season – a Rag & Bone leather coat with detachable shearling collar.  On a cool day this past week, I paired it with a white tee and eggplant Lululemon pants that feel like sweats but look hip enough to wear out and about (I suppose you could work out in them, too, but I haven’t tried that!).  It’s the perfect fall school dropoff/coffee run/lunch date outfit.

Cheers to fall!  Enjoy the season!
