In recent years, I’ve gravitated toward neutral lips more often than not: soft, pale pink lipsticks and nearly nude glosses. But this year, bright lips are back, and this fall, some colors normally reserved for spring and summer – more neon, more technicolor – are hot in a big way. I adore the juxtaposition of an intense, vivid lip and a cozy, cold-winter knit – in years past, I may have saved the bold lip for nighttime, but it’s perfect to add polish on even the most casual days. It ups the glam factor in an outfit that might normally feel frumpy, and on a cold, grey day, it puts more boom in the gloom. Best of all, treating yourself to a new lipstick updates your entire look without the kind of investment a new sweater or coat demands. Why not swipe on a hot pink or rich red for the morning Starbucks run, the pumpkin patch visit, the World Series playoff party or even the grocery run? You’ll feel captivating and classy, even if you’re in a sweatshirt and galoshes.
A few tips:
- If you’re unaccustomed to or uncomfortable with a super-bright lip, look for a formula labeled “sheer” or “rich” – these tend to have more moisture and won’t be as intense. But you can make any color work – just dilute it with a bit of chapstick if it’s too overwhelming or too dry on your lips.
- To keep lipstick in place, put a teeny bit of foundation or powder (if you have it) on your lips to help the color stick.
- Keep eye makeup light with this look – the focus is on your lips. That’s part of the beauty of this, too – it’s so easy when you’re pressed for time.
